Yash on choosing big-budget films over small love stories: “I have the opportunity”

Yash has explained why he is focusing on big-budget films and projects with a global reach, with co-star Sai Pallavi sharing a conversation that offered insight into his approach to filmmaking. During the making of Ramayana, Sai Pallavi asked Yash whether he would consider returning to the small, intimate love stories he worked on earlier in his career. His response highlighted his ambition to take Kannada and Indian cinema to a wider audience.

“I asked Yash if he’ll ever come back to making small cute love stories,” Sai Pallavi said. “He said, ‘I want to make my films big because I have the opportunity, and at the same time, I want to present Kannada and my South Indian and Indian cinema to the world.’”

Sai Pallavi shared the conversation during promotional events for Ramayana in Hyderabad. Her account comes as Yash continues to explore projects that aim to reach audiences beyond regional markets. The actor, who established himself in the Kannada film industry through a mix of romantic dramas, comedies and action entertainers, has increasingly taken on large-scale productions.

Before the KGF franchise brought him nationwide recognition, Yash appeared in films such as Googly, Mr and Mrs Ramachari and Kirataka. These projects helped establish his position in Kannada cinema, with stories largely rooted in romance, family relationships and everyday experiences.

His career took a different turn with KGF: Chapter 1, directed by Prashanth Neel. Conceived as a Pan-Indian film, it expanded Yash’s reach beyond Karnataka. The sequel, KGF: Chapter 2, went on to become a blockbuster, further strengthening his presence across the Indian film industry.

Following the success of the KGF franchise, Yash took up Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, directed by Geetu Mohandas. Yash is also part of Ramayana and he is co-producing the film through his banner, Monster Mind Creations.

In Ramayana, Yash plays Ravana, while Sai Pallavi portrays Sita and Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film is being produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with DNEG and Monster Mind Creations.

The film is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles on October 27, ahead of its worldwide theatrical release on November 5. Yash’s comments, as recounted by Sai Pallavi, underline his stated intention to use large-scale productions to introduce Kannada and Indian cinema to audiences around the world.
